Family Walled Garden

Clowance

This pretty cottage is surrounded by ancient walls which gives the garden good “bones”. The old garden was a curious combination of mixed hard materials and leaking sunken fishponds.  The client wanted to create a pretty, flowery, informal garden to suit the old cottage, and accommodate a growing family. The fishponds were filled in & the ground was levelled, whilst retaining the existing specimen trees. The concrete paving was buried but the stone paving was retained and improved, the huge granite menhirs were repurposed and used to create retaining walls and focal features. Despite extensive excavations very little was removed from the site.

Raised vegetable beds were built adjacent to the old greenhouse and a sunny seating area was added, benefitting from the reflective heat from the huge walls. A further oak pergola was added to the side of the house for a shady retreat. Dense and colourful planting surrounds the lawns, with areas for exotic plants as well as vegetables and fruit.
